Anonymous asked: For Unit 3+4 biology, did you use Nature of Biology 2? If so, can you please tell me what chapters of of unit 3 from that textbook is needed to cover the VCAA unit 3, and what chapter(s) does not need to be studied? Same with unit 4. THANK YOU! :)

Oh god I thought it was supposed to be the end of bio HAHAHHAA

Yeah, we studied Nature of Biol. To be honest, we never really used it. Well, I never touched it. I used my teacher’s material as well as my tutor notes. The only times I used it was for when I needed to look up terms and to find extra info.

I’m not sure what you mean with what chapters are needed, but I assume you need to study ALL the chapters? LOL. Because I’m looking at the questions my teacher set for bio, and it’s questions from every chapter, so every chapter is relevant.

I know it’s a big book, and there ARE some things that aren’t relevant to the course, but my memory isn’t that beast to remember the irrelevant things… HAHAH. But yeah, you need to study all the chapters. Or at least do the questions your teacher has set for you, because they are the relevant questions. And I sold my book 2 months ago so I can’t really say what’s not needed.

But unit 3: study your

  • bio macromolecules
  • learn your organelle functions: especially the organelles involved in protein synthesis (golgi apparatus, ribosomes, smooth/rough endoplasmic reticulum - as they go in-depth later on I think… Or maybe they go in depth in unit 4. You’ll have to look into it). Try learning things about the cell membrane as well, because this will most likely be your first SAC) AS WELL as mitochondria.
  • learn how diffusion/osmosis, facilitated diffusion, active transport because that’s got to do with cell membranes!
  • Learn enzymes  because this will most likely be your 2nd SAC or something (I CAN’T REMEMEBER OK). Learn what speeds up/slows down enzyme activity/rate of reaction and learn  the stucture of an amino acid off by heart.
  • The bitch about biol unit 3 is probably cellular respiration. You MUST learn this and understand it heaps, because I reckon it’s the most confusing bit. Learn aerobic & anaerobic respiration, photosynthesis and glycolysis. These are important for exams.
  • Homeostasis: hormones - learn definition because your 3rd SAC is on hormones. Learn the stimulus-response system because it will be very useful, as well as feedback mechanisms (positive/negative feedback). I can’t remember if the nervous system was big or not, but learn the structure and action potential (confusing).
  • disease: learn definition. You will learn about viruses, viroids, bacteria, protists, fungi etc. And the LEARN NON-SPECIFIC (1st & 2nd line of defence) & SPECIFIC (3rd line of defence) defence!!!!!!!!!!! VERY IMPORTANT. Learn about antigens & antibodies. What’s also important are things relating to vaccinations. Yeah, your last SAC is on this

Unit 4

  • DNA: learn the structure & nucleotide structure. Learn what happens during meiosis, mitosis; and learn terms like chromosomes, gene, somatic & germline cell, genome proteome because these things come up A LOT.
  • OMFG I CBF COME BACK WHEN THIS SHIT IS RELEVANT. I HAVE HOMEWORK TO DO
